Folsom Dedicates New ‘Johnny Cash Trail’ Art Piece

First Installation for the Johnny Cash Trail Art Project

The Johnny Cash Trail, a popular 2.5-mile paved path honoring the legendary musician’s connection to the city, recently welcomed a striking new addition: a seven-foot-tall bronze guitar pick sculpture.

The installation, titled “Cash’s Pick No. 1,” stands trailhead near Folsom’s iconic Rainbow Bridge, serving as a symbolic starting line for the popular bike and pedestrian trail.

The Making of a Monument

The idea for the project was born from the city’s desire to enhance the Johnny Cash Trail with public art that would capture the essence and of the “Man in Black”, and Folsom’s connection to him. The project was introduced by former Folsom Park and Rec Director Robert Goss, and spearheaded by the Folsom Arts and Cultural Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department staff.

A nationwide call for artists resulted in over a dozen submissions from around the country, with artist Adan Romo of Sacramento-based Romo Studios selected to bring the vision to life. Romo meticulously crafted the oversized pick, ensuring its design paid homage to Cash’s iconic style.

Funding the Artistic Tribute

The project was funded through a combination  of public and private sources. Federal grants contributed a significant portion, with some coming from the State of California through the efforts of Assemblyman Josh Hoover. The remaining funds were raised through donations from local businesses, community organizations, and individuals.

More Than Just a Pick

“Cash’s Pick No. 1” is more than just a striking visual; it’s a testament to the enduring impact Johnny Cash had on Folsom and the world. The sculpture serves as a reminder of the power of music, storytelling, and the human spirit. It’s a fitting tribute to the man who found inspiration within the walls of Folsom Prison, and performed live before the prison population. 

The Unveiling

The installation was unveiled at a dedication ceremony November 19. A crowd of over 50 people showed up, along with local dignitaries such as Folsom Mayor Mike Kozlowski, council members Anna Rohrbough, and newly elected School Board member YK Chalamcherla.

The piece is already drawing visitors, in spite of the rain, and is sure to become a popular attraction and for locals and tourists alike. Visitors are encouraged to interact, take photos, and reflect on the legacy of Johnny Cash.

Only the Beginning

This is just the first of several planned art installations along the Johnny Cash Trail. The city hopes to create a comprehensive and engaging experience that celebrates Cash’s life, music, and connection to Folsom. More to come.
