Folsom PD just issued a warning to be aware of catalytic converter theft.
There has been a rash of such thefts recently, as the converters contain precious metals and can be sold to metal recyclers for up to $300.
Any vehicle built after 1974 should have one, but trucks and SUV are most often targeted because they have higher ground clearance and are easy to crawl under. Toyota Trucks and SUV of the late 90’s to late 2000’s are especially vulnerable because they are even more exposed than others.
Thieves can cut/unbolt the converter in minutes.
If your Catalytic Converter has been replaced with an aftermarket Catalytic Converter within the past few years, there is a good chance it won’t be stolen, as the new ones don’t have as much of the precious metals, so thieves typically don’t take them.
It is always a good idea to park in well-lit, highly visible areas, where windows, security cameras or people walking by would see someone trying to break in or crawl under your vehicle.
Park high clearance vehicles like SUV and trucks in garages or near low clearance vehicles that may make it harder for thieves to crawl under the vehicle.
Some private companies and muffler shops offer welding to make it harder to remove the catalytic converter or etching to help identify the converter if it is stolen. Also note that there are various clamps, locks and alarms available to deter thefts.
