20 Questions With… Paul Tran (aka ‘Cybertrano’)

aul Tran, also known as ‘Cybertrano’ to the MyFolsom.Com community, is a Vietnamese-born immigrant who works as an Internet applications engineer for the State of California in Sacramento, California. A bodybuilding enthusiast and card-carrying Republican, some could say he’s the next Arnold Schwarzenegger! Find out a little more about Paul and some of the things that make him a great Folsom resident.

1. What do you do for a living?
Internet application engineering and electronics engineering.

2. What is your proudest achievement?
The year was 30 April 1975, after the Vietnam War, my family escaped deaths and Vietnam when Saigon fell. We had one day to get the hell out. Because my father was a fairly high ranking officer in the Army, he would had been imprisoned by the communists. We came to Florida empty-handed (No kidding!!! We brought with us the equivalence of $500,000 worth of Vietnamese money which was worthless here in the states, too funny) and was able to make it to where we are today is just too cool. The hardest part was learning the darn English language! The credit will go to this great country which gave us the opportunity to exercise our freedom and hard work. I don’t like to see people who are taking things for granted.

3. What’s in your CD player right now?
Classic rock of the 70’s and 80’s.

4. If you could open up your own business here in Folsom, what would it be?
Something related to computer software business, but that is not a good option right now.

5. Where did you grow up?
Vietnam and Florida

I would not call this the biggest regret, but I would say – to get my degree in computer science instead of electronics engineering – I hate electronics.

Switched my career from electronics engineering to computer software development. I really love my currently job and I hated my old electronics engineering position with the former McClellan Air Force Base.

Fitness – it’s a healthy life style that I enjoy.

Bodybuilding – I will pump iron with Arnold if he gets elected as governor hehehe. I have been following his career way back in the late 70’s when he was a iron pumping champion…. Quite an amazing guy!!!

Martial arts – This is a really funny story for me to recall. Growing up in the late 70’s in Tampa Florida, due to Bruce Lee’s influences, every kid in my high school thought that ALL Asian kids were Kung Fu experts. It did not matter how skinny and weak a person was. I was able to scare off the biggest kids, even before I took Karate training.

Biking, reading , gardening, ponding, camping, pretty good with ping pong, etc.

None in particular. Just like the team as a whole.

16. What’s the closest you’ve ever come to death?
In a robbery. I worked in a Chinese restaurant in 1983; two robbers came through the back door after the restaurant closed and tried to grab me and my co-worker and brought us to the front register. One grabbed me from behind; but I quickly turned around kicked and punched and ran like hell to the front. The other robber ran after me with a gun or knife (don’t remember). Luckily, I did not get shot and still think about it from time to time.
