Hop Sing: Oldie But Goodie

Folsom has grown quite a bit over the years. What used to be a quaint prison town has turned in to a thriving suburb, a city in its own right. However there are a few places in town where you step in and you kind of feel like you’re getting the vibe of Folsom when it was simply a prison town. Hop Sing is that place. It’s been around for as long as I’ve known, and from what I can tell, it’s been around from a time when it was “the” chinese food place in Folsom (As in, the only place in town). However you can tell why it’s a survivor – it’s got great food and very friendly staff.

Every time I go to Hop Sing, I envision the chinese place the family goes to in “A Christmas Story” on Christmas Day. It’s interesting to see the variety of people inside – it’s mostly old-timers, but quite a few younger people inside as well. I often wonder if most of the regulars have lived I Folsom for more than 20 years. My guess is yes.

Anyway, on to the food – I am pretty easy to guess when it comes my ordering habits. My favorite has always been sweet & sour pork. I sometimes try to stray from that so I’m not so boring, but this time I picked the sweet & sour lunch combo. For $5.99 you get a big pile of sweet & sour chicken, huge pile of fried rice, and the largest egg roll I have ever seen (it was immense!). The portion sizes were beyond huge. Yet for the price, it’s probably the best deal in town! I had plenty for that meal and lunch the next day.

I’ll go back, if for no other reason than it’s the best deal in town… this place has been a staple of Folsom for quite a few years. I envision it will stay that way. Great food, great people, great price!
