One of the biggest traditions of Folsom is the annual Folsom
Rodeo. A 4th of July staple for many years, the rodeo has
entertained Folsom residents and neighbors at the Dan Russell Arena
(right by City Park). The annual event kicks off with a community
picnic and concert at the city park, where country-western
enthusiasts enjoy a free concert and lunch from home. Then, when the
traveling rodeo arrives in town, it is celebrated with a
cattle drive down Folsom's historic Sutter Street, where cowboys and
Folsom dignitaries round up the cattle at high noon and parade them
down the streets for all the public to see.
At the event itself, the rodeo consists of several different events,
including bull riding, bronco riding, barrel racing, steer
wrestling, and the always popular "mutton busting". Mutton
busting consists of a handful of kids from the area, who strap on a
helmet and hang on to a sheep as long as they can! For those who are
not as interested in watching the festivities, one can always enjoy
the nightly carnival that sets up in the parking lot. After the end
of the rodeo, fireworks are launched every night, which can be seen
throughout all of Folsom.
Tickets for the event can be
purchased at the Chamber of Commerce about 1-2 weeks before the
event.
